Dining out During the Holidays

Tis’ the season for dining out with friends and family! You should never restrict yourself from ordering your favorite foods! However, you can always make minor adjustments to build that balanced plate. Here are three tips to stay on track when heading to your favorite restaurant with family and friends.

  1. Swap your starchy side for a salad.

Veggies are complex carbohydrates and loaded with fiber. Swapping starchy sides for a salad will help keep you feeling more full longer and provide your body with many great nutrients. I love a good turkey burger (you can have the beef!), and swapping out fries for a side salad or roasted veggies helps me get the best of both worlds.

2. Skip the sodas.

Focus on water intake when you’re dining out and save that money. Not only will this help with any fluid retention from entrees prepared with a little more salt, but it will also help you stay full and prevent the tendency to overeat the appetizers.

3. Make sure you have a good source of protein on your plate.

Add some extra chicken to your burrito bowl. Add grilled shrimp to your pasta. Ask for extra turkey on your sub. Wherever you are or whatever you are ordering, see if you can incorporate a quality source of lean protein into your meal. This additional source of protein will prevent you from raiding the pantry as soon as you get home. Protein makes you feel full! Take advantage of that.
