Have Your King Cake and Eat It Too

Several years ago, I fell in love with the city of New Orleans. One thing that may come to mind when you discuss New Orleans is “party.” Not just any party though, think MARDI GRAS. As Carnival season is upon us, I want to celebrate Fat Tuesday by talking about something super yummy… KING CAKE.

If not local to New Orleans, you can still get your king cake fix by having them shipped to your door, however, I want to offer some options for lower calories, lower carb alternatives that can satisfy that king cake desire without totally wrecking your New Year’s Resolutions.

If you plan to just enjoy one slice of king cake this season, enjoy, work the carbs in to your plan and move forward. Congratulations on understanding life balance. If you plan to fully dive in and jump off the wagon with King Cake, let’s chat about some options.

A standard slice of king cake can have up to 300 calories and 60 grams of carbs, with 30 grams of sugar. Let’s explore some options for lesser carbs and sugar but still to ease the need for King Cake.

Breads on Oak Original King Cake. (Vegan, Dairy free, Low sugar).

Yes, organic king cake made with gluten free flours, unsweetened almond milk, and Earth Balance vegan butter replacer.

Per slice (12-14 sliced per cake), it has 160 calories, 22 grams carbs, 3 grams fiber, and 5 grams sugar. And, like the Green Fork’s Paleo King Cake, it also has less than a teaspoon added sugar.

Girls Gone Vegan Low Sugar King Cake. (Gluten Free, Vegan, Low sugar).

Made with gluten free flour, organic coconut oil, and vegan butter, this isn’t as low in calories but definitely an option for delivery across the USA.

Per slice ( 12 slices per cake) approximately 265 calories, 50 grams of carbs, and seven grams of protein per slice.
King Cake-Flavored Vodka by Pinnacle.

I am not saying vodka is good for you. I am saying that it is an option for lower calories to get your King Cake flavor fix.
Vodka has about 100 calories, with about 7.5 grams of carb and sugar per 1.5-ounce serving. To keep calories in check, try mixing with club soda or water. And keep in mind that ‘moderate’ intake is not more than one drink a day for women; two for men.
Smoothie King’s Gladiator King Cake Smoothie.

With only 350 calories, this protein shake can be a meal replacer and a sweet treat to cure that King Cake fix. Made with Almond Milk, Bananas, Gladiator Protein, Protein Blend, Ground Cinnamon, Pure Almond Extract, and Vanilla Extract, this is a note worthy option to celebrate Carnival. With 34 grams of carbs, please note that 23 grams is sugar and I would steer clear for the rest of the day. You can always ask them to “make it skinny.”
