Is coffee bad for you?

Is coffee bad for you?

What is it about coffee that people love so much? For me, it's comfort and warmth first thing in the morning. Almost symbolic to start my day with a cup of hot black coffee and a book.

Good news! Black coffee has proven to be beneficial to our health. Study after study has shown that 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day does include many health benefits. When you think of coffee, the first thing that may come to mind is caffeine and energy, but coffee benefits you with an energy boost and contains antioxidants that can prevent certain diseases. Let's look at some of the top benefits that coffee provides us.

1.     Supports brain health

Research has found that drinking coffee can prevent neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Caffeine from coffee increases acetylcholine and serotonin, which helps the brain stimulate and regulate the blood-brain barrier.

2.     Supports heart health

While you may hear concerns about caffeine and heart health, studies have shown that having two to three cups of coffee daily promotes good heart health by lowering the risk of heart conditions.

3.     Boosts energy levels

The caffeine from coffee stimulates the central nervous system, which increases energy levels. This happens because caffeine from coffee blocks the neurotransmitter adenosine and, in turn, increases dopamine resulting in higher energy levels.

4.     Can promote weight management

Research has found that coffee can support gut health and alter fat storage, which could help with weight management. Coffee also gives us energy, which will motivate us to engage in physical activity, promoting weight management.

Keep in mind this is geared explicitly toward black coffee without the added creamers and sugars. If you prefer sweet-tasting additives to your coffee, try natural sweeteners, almond milk, honey, cinnamon, or vanilla extract instead of heavy creamers and sugar additives. Researchers have exclusively studied the many health benefits of coffee, such as promoting brain health, heart health, weight management, and boosting energy levels. The answer is that coffee is not bad for you in moderation and can benefit your health.
